CHECKOUT // Creating everyday

Often creativity is seen as sparks of genius or moments of inspiration. But the more we look at it, it might be about discipline.

I came across this tweet from Daniel Elk (founder of Spotify) on Picasso:

This is fascinating to me

He created something new, every day, for 71 years

I’m sure Picasso was brilliant in his own right, but I think this speaks volume. It’s about creating everyday.

It reminds of this video of Pharrell talking to Steve Stout. Pharrell discussed the idea of creating music everyday.

But his lean on it is: you’re not creating, you’re checking ideas out from the universe. And what you check out one day might not be what you check out the next.

This all got me thinking about a video from iconic music producer DJ Premier. He discussed working with Biggie and how it almost didn’t happen.

BIG called DJ Premier up asking for one more record to which DJ Premier said he didn’t have time. Biggie insisted, Premier relented. The result: “Unbelievable” - one of Biggie’s best records.

DJ Premier almost didn’t “check out Unbelievable” that day.

There’s more to it than just making art everyday, but it does seem like having that discipline and making everyday is a direct path to being creative.
